Trip Overview

The 12-day Manaslu Circuit Trek is a rewarding journey around Mount Manaslu (8,163 m), the world’s eighth-highest peak. It offers a unique mix of adventure, stunning Himalayan landscapes, and cultural experiences. Following newly developed trails, this trek suits experienced trekkers who seek solitude and an authentic experience away from busy routes. Here, ancient traditions and breathtaking scenery come together in an untouched setting.

The trek starts with a drive from Kathmandu to Machha Khola. The trail follows the Budhi Gandaki River, passing through lush forests, terraced fields, and traditional villages that showcase rural Nepali life. As the altitude increases, both the scenery and culture change. Trekkers will notice Tibetan Buddhist influences in villages like Ghap, Namrung, and Lho. Acclimatization stops at Samagaon and Samdo help trekkers adjust to the altitude while they explore diverse ecosystems and rich local culture.

A major highlight of the trek is the tough crossing of Larkya La Pass (5,160 m). Trekkers tackle this early in the morning to avoid strong winds, and they are rewarded with stunning views of glaciers, alpine landscapes, and deep gorges. After crossing the pass, the route descends into the Annapurna Conservation Area. The varying terrain leads to Dharapani, marking the end of the journey. Overall, the Manaslu Circuit Trek offers an unforgettable experience filled with isolation, high-mountain challenges, and the true essence of Himalayan life.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1 Drive from Kathmandu (1,324 m) to Machha Khola (890 m)

Driving hours

(160 km / 8 hours)

Your Manaslu adventure begins with an exciting full-day scenic drive from the bustling capital of Kathmandu. Departing early in a comfortable private vehicle (or shared jeep where roads allow), the route winds westward through the Trishuli River valley, passing terraced farmlands, small towns like Dhading Besi, and the bustling Arughat Bazaar. The road becomes rougher after Arughat as you follow the Budhi Gandaki River upstream, offering glimpses of rural Nepali life, suspension bridges, and lush green hillsides. After approximately 8-9 hours (covering about 160-170 km), you arrive in Machha Khola, a small riverside settlement at lower elevation. Settle into a cozy teahouse, enjoy a warm welcome dinner, and prepare for the trekking days ahead.

Day 2 Trek from Machha Khola (870 m) to Jagat (1,400 m)

Trek Distance

22 km/ 13.7 miles

Highest Altitude

1,400 m / 4,593 ft

Trek Duration

5-6 hours

The first trekking day starts gently along the Budhi Gandaki River on a mix of dirt paths and stone steps. You cross several suspension bridges, pass through dense forests with occasional waterfalls, and walk past terraced fields and small Gurung villages like Khorlabesi and Tatopani (with possible hot springs views). The trail gradually ascends with some ups and downs, entering the Manaslu Conservation Area. After about 5-6 hours of moderate walking (around 20 km), you reach Jagat, a charming village that serves as an entry checkpoint for the restricted area. Explore the local monastery or relax by the river while acclimatizing to the start of higher terrain.

Day 3 Trek from Jagat (1,400 m) to Deng (1,860 m)

Trek Distance

6.5 km / 4 miles

Highest Altitude

1,860m / 6,200ft

Trek Duration

6 - 7 hrs

Today's stage takes you deeper into the valley with more cultural immersion. The path continues upstream, passing the large Gurung village of Philim (with its school and views of waterfalls), then climbs through narrow gorges and bamboo forests via Sirdibas and Salleri. You cross more suspension bridges and encounter mani walls (stone carvings with Buddhist prayers). The landscape shifts to denser vegetation and occasional glimpses of snow-capped peaks. After 6-7 hours of steady trekking (about 20-22 km), arrive in Deng, a peaceful hamlet surrounded by hills, where Tibetan-influenced culture becomes more evident in the teahouses and local customs.

Day 4 Trek from Deng (1,860 m) to Namrung (2,660 m)

Trek Distance

6.5 km / 4 miles

Highest Altitude

2,660 m / 8,728 ft

Trek Duration

6-7 hrs

Ascend steadily through beautiful rhododendron and pine forests, crossing the river multiple times on bridges. The trail passes traditional villages like Ghap (with its mani walls and chortens) and offers your first clear views of Mt. Manaslu and other peaks. Buddhist influence grows stronger with prayer flags and gompas along the way. After a longer but rewarding day of about 7-8 hours (around 18-20 km), reach Namrung, a picturesque Tibetan-style village at higher elevation with excellent teahouse options and panoramic mountain vistas that begin to dominate the horizon.

Day 5 Trek from Namrung (2,660 m) to Shyala (3,500 m)

Trek Distance

14 km/ 10.9 miles

Highest Altitude

3,500m / 11482 ft

Trek Duration

7 hours

One of the most scenic days unfolds as the trail climbs through open valleys and past alpine meadows. You pass the charming village of Lho (with its large gompa and views of Manaslu), then continue to Shyala, arriving after about 7 hours of walking (shorter distance but with notable altitude gain). The dramatic sight of Manaslu, Himal Chuli, and Peak 29 towering above is unforgettable, often framed by prayer flags fluttering in the crisp air. Shyala offers stunning sunset views and a sense of entering the high Himalayan zone.

Day 6 Trek from Shyala (3,500 m) to Samagaun (3,530 m)

Trek Distance

10 km/6.2 miles

Highest Altitude

3,530 m/11,581 ft

Trek Duration

6-7 hours

A shorter but breathtaking stage leads you to the heart of the Manaslu region. The path contours through open pastures with yaks grazing and passes the ancient Ribung Monastery before reaching Samagaun (also called Sama), a large Tibetan Buddhist village at 3,530 m. After 6-7 hours, settle in for the evening amid stone houses, gompas, and close-up views of Manaslu's massive face. This village is perfect for cultural exploration, including visits to local monasteries.

Day 7 Rest/Acclimatization Day in Samagaun

Essential for safe acclimatization before the high pass, today is a relaxed rest day in Samagaun. Optional side trips include a short hike to Birendra Lake (a serene glacial lake) or up to the Manaslu Base Camp viewpoint for closer mountain panoramas. Enjoy village life, interact with locals, visit the Pungen Gompa, or simply rest with hot drinks while your body adjusts to the altitude.

Day 8 Trek from Samagaun (3,530 m) to Samdo (3,875 m)

Trek Distance

8.2km / 5miles

Highest Altitude

3,875m / 12,713ft

Trek Duration

3 - 4 hrs

A shorter trekking day takes you further north along the upper Budhi Gandaki valley toward the Tibetan border. The trail passes through yak pastures and offers views of glaciers and Larkya peaks. After 3-4 hours, arrive in Samdo, the last permanent settlement before the pass, with its Tibetan refugee community and dramatic barren landscapes. Explore the village or relax in preparation for the coming high-altitude days.

Day 9 Trek from Samdo (3,875 m) to Dharamsala/Larke Phedi (4,480 m)

Trek Distance

11.7km / 7.2miles

Highest Altitude

4,480m / 14,698ft

Trek Duration

3 - 4 hrs

Climb steadily toward the pass through rocky terrain and moraines, with views of the Larkya Glacier. After 3-4 hours of gradual ascent, reach Dharamsala (also called Larke Phedi), a basic high camp with basic teahouses. The thin air and cold temperatures make this a challenging but short day—rest early for tomorrow's pass crossing.

Day 10 Trek from Dharamsala (4,480 m) to Bhimtang (3,720 m) via Larkya La Pass (5,160 m)

Trek Distance

24.7km / 15.3miles

Highest Altitude

The trail winds up snowy slopes with breathtaking 360-degree Himalayan views, including Manaslu, Annapurna II, and Himlung. After 4-5 hours of climbing, celebrate at the pass summit, then descend steeply on the other side through moraines and glacial valleys to Bhimtang. Total time: 7-8 hours of strenuous effort, rewarded by alpine scenery and a sense of achievement.

Day 11 Trek from Bhimtang (3,720 m) to Dharapani (1,910 m)

7 - 8 hrs

A long but beautiful descent through birch and rhododendron forests, passing yak kharkas (pastures) and the villages of Gho and Tilije. The trail drops sharply into the Marsyangdi Valley, connecting with the Annapurna Circuit trail. After 7-8 hours, reach Dharapani, where civilization returns with better facilities and warmer air.

Day 12 Drive from Dharapani (1,910 m) to Besisahar (760 m), then to Kathmandu

Driving hours

224km / 11 hours

Highest Altitude

1,910m / 6,266ft

After breakfast, transfer by jeep or private vehicle along the Marsyangdi River valley to Besisahar (about 3-4 hours), enjoying views of cascading waterfalls and Annapurna peaks.
